Production Diary

Week 1-

Day 1:
On day one of filming chose to film over at the park opposite college because we decided to shoot a woodland scene for our opening shot. When logged out a DSLR camera, 70-300mm lense, a tripod and SD card then headed over to the woodland area at the park. We set up the tripod and camera then experimented with the shot; keeping it within the limits of our story board and camera shot list. We ended up with a out of focus into focus zoom shot, which added a unique and elegant look to the scene. Due to the nature and locations needed for our other shots, we were unable to film anymore that day.

Day 2:

On the second day we arranged to use a drone that a member of staff was willing to let us borrow for our film. Despite this, we were unable to do so because of the bad weather conditions although he did have spare stock footage that we looked through. We chose shots that were close to what we had planned because we wanted a particular style and look for our video. Other than this, we recorded my voice over for the film, which only took several minutes as there was no script to plan or write.

Day 3:

On day three I logged out a camera and a 50mm lens from the IV room and took it home over night. We planned to do a bochan shot of a busy road so it took the camera to a bridge over Caister bypass during the evening and set it up as the cars we going past. This allowed me to get the shot we had envisioned. The road wasn't as busy as I had hoped but there were enough cars and other lights to get a decent shot.

Day 4:

On day four, one of our group members used their Go-Pro to film a sunset that evening. The video was over 3 hours long so we eventually turned it into a time lapse to make a nice, peaceful effect in the video. The sunset time lapse was made up of around 300 photos, so it took a while to get the time down to 15 seconds.

Day 5:

On day five, someone in the group took a camera out to a derelict house near their village to get some rough, contrasting shots for our film. He captured many different shots such as a broken window, peeled wallpaper and overgrown plant life. He included pans, zooms and other camera movements to add to the tone of each shot.

Week 2-

Day 1:

On the first day of the second week, the proper editing process began. We gathered all our clips and placed them all into a Premiere Pro file. Following this, we started to put them into an order that flowed well as well as suited the voice over. We then went through all the different animations that could be put onto the clips to fade them in and out of each other to add the the elegance of the imagery we shot.

Day 2:

On this day we decided to look for some suitable music to put in the background to play along with the voice over and compliment the film's visuals. For this we went to Bensound.com because the music on there is royalty free, so we knew it would be perfect for us due to budgeting. We listened to several different tracks but ended up choosing 'Sad Day' because it's tone suited the film better than anything else we could find on the website.

Day 3:

On the third day, we changed the contrast and colours of the shots to make them match each other. This was because many of the shots were taken of different cameras which left them with slightly different looks. We soon overcame this and moved on with editing. We later added the music and voice over in. We trimmed the voice over to make it fit the length of the film and cut certain bits out to make the words seem more powerful. Throughout doing this, we noticed the voice over had several microphone bumps in which were distracting and annoying. We spent a while trying to minimize the volume of these bumps to make them less noticeable in the final product.

Day 4:

On day four we added the title sequence and credits to the video. We added fade effects with the title to match the zoom of the shot in which it appears. The credits have a rolling effect on them to make them roll from off screen. up the page and then off screen again. These effects gave the final piece a very professional and aesthetically pleasing look. Other than this, we continued to tweek and adjust several different things such as music volume, clip lengths and animations on each of the clips.

Day 5:

This was our final day for this project. We had done almost everything we just had a few minor details to fix and add. At the beginning of the film we added my name and occupation to one of the clips when I started talking. This also gave a professional look to the film as it resembled a proper documentary made with a bigger budget. After this, we added some other effects to several other clips such as a zoom on the bochan shot and a warp stabilizer on the sunset clip due to it being a bit shaky at the start. Following this, we saved, rendered and exported the file to finish it completely. We later uploaded it to YouTube on the East Norfolk channel for everyone to watch and enjoy.
