Reflection of Depict Short and Pre-production and Production Process

Pre-production

During pre-production, I enjoyed the team planning stage. The fact we all got to exchange and express ideas made the process a lot more enjoyable. It allowed us to connect with each other more before going into production, making the whole process easier and less of a chore. I also enjoyed the storyboard aspect of the planning stage because it gave us the ability to turn our thoughts into an actual image to share with the group and work around to make our short film as professional and clean as possible. Despite this, I did not enjoy the forms and other various paperwork we had to fill in and sign. This process got very repetitive and tedious as there seemed to be an endless amount. I didn't realise this much paperwork was needed to make such a short film. I found that the location recces took up the most time because we needed to find out a lot more information such as the available times to shoot, permission from various people to actually film there and other such details.

Production

After the pre-production it was time to turn our vision into a reality. My favorite part of production was the freedom we had to shoot whatever we wanted and being able to make our shots unique to ourselves. I also enjoyed this because I learnt how to use more features on the camera that I wasn't too comfortable with before hand such as aperture, ISO and shutter speed. The thing that went best during production was the schedule in which we planned to shoot each scene. We stuck to this plan fairly well with only minor set backs due to weather conditions. Despite this, our final product still turned out great and was received well by those who viewed it. If we were to re-do the project, I think I would change aspects of the editing stage. We could have added more to make the film unique to our group.

Importance of pre-production

Throughout this process of making our DepicT film, I have learnt many new aspects of production that are very important to the final outcome of the film. Things such as storyboarding, location recces and talent forms are very important because they give a sense of whats happening, when and where its happening and gives an image to aim for whilst filming. This all adds to the quality of the film, as its more stable and focused than an unplanned, unscheduled production.
